U.S.  flags rim the parking lot at Albertson’s today as I run to get instant oatmeal for Mom.  The Veterans of Foreign Wars put out their gnarled fingers to shake my hand and exchange money for the red poppy peeking from my buttonhole.

Mom is wearing one too. It is wrapped around the oxygen tubing looping her ear. She’s never missed a Memorial Day and her poppy and I’ll be darned if she misses it now. Although the stroke on Friday shut down the left side and impacted her swallowing, when I show her the poppy, she says, “Memorial Day”.

She remembers the men and women who served with her in WWII. She remembers my twin serving in the Coast Guard. I know her heart breaks when she thinks of the dead and the wounded men and women returning from a too-long-fought war in the Middle East.

It’s the latter that I pray for today.  My concern is that we have forgotten them. In the budget cutting frenzy, I’d rather pay more taxes than have any of our veterans go without medical treatment, therapy and family counseling for PTSD, job creation, and housing coverage.

The greatest generation must not be the only ones with a memory of gratefulness and a debt to service that can never be repaid.

Kathy Caprino has written an excellent article for Forbes called Mandating Women At The Leadership Table: Why the Time is Now.  There is evidence that having women in top leaders spots benefits a corporation financially but corporations aren’t doing their part.  Advancing women doesn’t seem to be a priority despite real benefits.  Read the article to learn more!

Read and weep.  What I just do NOT get is the heavy body of data that points to the fact that profits and shareholder return are greater when women are in top level positions. What is it going to take???
